I have to wonder about the rule of adding 1 to how many months old they are. By that logic, a 12 month old puppy (yes, they're still a puppy) should be able to hold it for 13 hours. Maybe some dogs could, but it certainly wouldn't be good for them. This does depend a great deal on the breed, and on the individual animal. Larger dogs typically have larger bladders. Also, many animals seem to need to go more often when allowed to, after being forced to hold it for a long time, even after becoming adult. I agree, you should get a book, or perhaps go to a training session--for example PetSmart holds group training sessions for a variety of purposes, for a reasonable fee. They can help you take into consideration breed, home situation, etc. when determining a schedule.

Puppies usually gain conscious control of their bowels and bladder when they are around 4 months (16 weeks) old. You should be house-training them before this age, but don't scold the pup if it has a few accidents.

Depends by exactly what you mean. I wouldn't leave a puppy under about 8 months all day and expect him to hold it. If you mean just control until they can get to the door and outside, it depends partly on the dog, but I'd say they have some control and awareness around 3 months.

Some dogs never have total control. Cockers are notorious for "piddling" when they get excited. Most puppies can be trained within afew weeks totally if you are diligent about the training....

Untill 1 year old the general rule is 1 hour for every month old.

1 month - 1 hour
2 months - 2 hours
