RAR files are archives similar to ZIP files. They are not the files that you can actually play.
What you will need to do is unzip them with an archiving utility like winrar* or 7 zip*, once you have done that you will be able to see the file inside and play it with a regular media player (assuming that the file inside the archive is mp3 or similar music file).

Hope this helps.

Here is a good link where you can download winrar for here: http://bit.ly/1BooiXa
You can use winrar to decompress zip files and a bunch of other formats. Other good programs are 7zip and winzip but in my opinion winrar is the best one. Fuctionalities are pretty similar for all programs: basically you can decompress a file simply by right-clicking it and by choosing the destination folder.
Winrar is available for free under a trial licence. The good thing is the trial period never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.
Winrar opens all formats like .zip, .rar, .7z, .iso, .tar, .jar etc. That's why I recommend it.

A rar file is a compressed file, you need a program like WinRar to uncompress it.
For Windows WinRar:

Izarc is also very good, and free:

For Mac UnRarX:

.rar is not an audio files. .rar is an archive/compressed file format. Most likely, the audio files is inside. You need to get the tool (like winrar) to extract it.

You need a .rar utility to decompress the rar archived file. WinRar or Stuffit will both extract rar files.
