Only on the bottom if you are referring to a very young child. They don't need to be smacked in the face or anything. God gave them the extra padding on the back end to get your point across.

I do believe there are times when spanking
a child is a reasonable consequence for
the childs offense. It must be an extreme
offense that you want stopped now! Time outs,
groundings and taking away of things sometimes
just doesn't get the message across that what
they did is totally unacceptable. I'm not talking
about beatings or straps or belts or paddles,
just a good smack on the butt. There is never
an excuse to batter a child.

yes as long as the child knew why he/she was getting smacked. The smack fit the wrong. And done reasonably and not with temper or force.
Too many kids laugh at light discipline today.

The word discipline comes from disciple, as in the disciples of Jesus. It means 'to teach' just like Jesus taught his disciples.
So no, smacking is not discipline because it does not teach a child anything.
With my children, I am very clear about my expectations, what the rules are and the consequences for breaking them. Then I follow through. Say what you mean, mean what yousay and follow through.
You have to make discipline age appropriate so if you tell me the age of your child maybe I can offer some suggestions.

I honestly believe it depends on the child. I have a 13 year old who was spanked. Nothing else got her attention!
However, I also have a 2 year old who we don't spank. We don't have to. We have never had the behavior problems with her that we had with our older daughter. She listens and does as she is told no questions asked.
I think all other avenues of discipline should be utilized and spanking is a "last resort".

Not across the head, spanking is one of the primarily looked-down-upon disciplines recently. The law says max 3, forget that! there is no way I would ever yell at my child (if I had one) and teach im verbal arguments! If he's done something wrong, he'll get that spanking, more than thrice! the law is making children soft, that is why you see so many kids YOUNGER than 12 cussing at their moms!

I don't care what anybody says. Sometimes a kid needs a swat or two on the butt, or they will walk all over you. For instance, if a sister is hitting her other other sister after you tell them no, then a simple swat as long as it isn't fueled by temper, might be necessary to make the child understand what hitting does. I might get crap for this, but I had to do this a few times to my twin daughters because they were beginning to fight with each other more and more. It actually solved the problem. They realized hitting was hurtful thing to do.

No. Smacks turn into harder swats, which turn into prolonged spankings, which turn into child abuse. Then we grow up, fight wars and wonder.
I believe in discipline. I believe in punishment. I believe in having consequences for your actions and parents following through to enforce them.

I don'e believe a spank will hurt your child but I DO NOT believe in making your child afraid of you when you raise your hand. I spank my children on the rear when they absolutely need it and it is not too often. When it does happen they know they have just pushed me to the end and all is right for another few months.

AMEN to that! A child needs disciplined once in awhile. You don't have to take out your anger on them, just what is necessary. It does work. Look at kids today, No respect. There's your answer.
