To make it simple, the prescription is just instructions on how to make your contacts or glasses. Try on someone elses glasses and most likely you will not be able to see clearly out of them. If you just need reading glasses you can always pick them up at drugstores or walmarts without a prescription. Basically they are just magnifying glasses.

No, that's not right. If you get the wrong prescription with glasses, you could really screw up your eyes. Your eyes are specially designed, so you couldn't have glasses for someone who has 11/20 vision if you have 16/20 vision. That will make your eyes worse. You need a specific kind of glasses/contacts in order to see correctly.

Whoa! Honey, not all people have the same Rx! Some people are myopic, some are not. Some have astigmatism, some do not! If you just tried on glasses like you do shirts, what's to say you are getting the right one? You can do some serious damage that way. Eyeglass prescriptions are as close to an exact science as it gets! Your personal opinion is in dire need of doing some serious research, dear. "Physician, heal thyself," does not apply!

You actually can harm your eyes if you use the wrong prescription. It is sort of like how you can't get birth control pills without going to the obgyn.
It is a way of being sure that you are in decent health and maintaining that level of health so that you don't damage yourself unknowingly. Better safe than sorry, especially with those peepers!

Well, I recently got an ill fiting pair of contacts, and they irritated my cornea so much, I had to wear glasses for like 10 days and put drops in my eyes for a week.

See if some of your friends who wear glasses will let you try them on. Then you'll understand that we all see differently, so we need prescriptions for our individual correction.
