Do you know how big china is? (1.3 billion!!?) There aren't one famous dish. In my opinion, "chinese food" should not be used to generalize food in china. It is wayyy too broad.

Depends where you are at

Beijing- Peking Duck(go to a hutong for these! They are the best and cheapest. A hutong is a old neighborhood)

Tianjin- steamed dumplings filled with meats and veggies

ChangDe in Hunan- Spicy hot foods

I pretty sure that the modern Hamburger would be considered the American national dish. Along with maybe french fries and like she said Apple Pie

Every City has its own dishes... but i think Peking duck is very famous to many people.

It depends where you are in China, for instance :
- in Beijing you have the Beijing Duck / roasted duck
- in Chengdu you have the spicy ( very spicy ) hot pot

Every town has it's own speciality.
