What exactly is your reasoning for your obedience, fear or love? Both? Something else?

Why, as a child of your parents, do you respect, listen to, and obey them ? Probably out of a mixture of love and a healthy fear of displeasing them. It's the same thing with our Heavenly Father! I obey and listen and show respect for His ways with my behavior and speech out of love and fear of displeasing Him. I have a choice, the Bible says at Romans 6:23... The wages sin Pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Jesus Christ our Lord. I can live for God and live forever or I can be disobedient and suffer the consequences, which in this case we are told is death.

Obedience to God is for our own good. If we are outside His will, following our own course, things might be good, bad, or indifferent. If we are inside His will everything in our lives will be for the good - we will grow, learn, love. It doesn't mean that we will live a hardship free life, but being in His will is the best course for our lives. The same is true for all of God's commandments - if we follow them, we will be a lot happier than if we don't - we will live a better life than if we don't. God tells us these things for our benefit - not His. It is like a parent who tells their children not to touch the hot stove - it is in the best interest of the child to obey their parent. The parent tells the child so that the child won't be hurt. It would be a very bad parent who let the child touch the hot stove just because they didn't want to cause waves.

Fear of hell. I dont practice any religion, I was brought up christian, but never took the words of the bible for anything more than a few anecdotes and fables that outline courteous and moral behavior. much like Aesop's fables.

after a priest was caught with child pornography in our town my trust and credibility in the church dropped to nothing.

The catholic church is nothing more than a franchise, feeding the spiritually hungry what they want to hear. what they want to believe.

i fear hell, because hell is real. it is part of our lives, but only if we choose so. the deeper you get involved with evil, the more your life will become an inescapable hell.

or, you just have bad luck.
