The easiest way to measure the overall growth of the algae is to take a reading of the total mass of the plants.

This can be done by filtering the contents of the jars through pre-weighed filter paper and allowing the contents to dry. If you chose the right size pour for the paper, this should be easy. If you do not have access to regular filter paper, try coffee filters or paper towels.

You might need to experiment to get the right paper, but then it will be a very simple job to get the final results.

I think you should put the jars in the sun to promote algae growth. As for measuring the growth, you could try taking photographs of it each day.

Interesting.
Try to put a jar in sunlight, another in shadow but with some nutrients in the water(as fertilizers used for agriculture),another in shadow without nutrients ,and , another in sunlight with nutrients in the water. You should see some good differences.
The sample "in sun light with nutrients" will give you the idea about what is happening in some tropical places close, or ,on barrier reefs. Creating big changements in the environment.
