Light from the front shows more details, but it's also formless and boring. They were probably thinking about how the background would look in different angles, and got the best one. Maybe a little bit of fill-flash would help, though.

I think the shadows work well in front of them (a little haunting perhaps), and its kind of a photo rule not to shoot people with the sun in their eyes since they would be squinting terribly if the photographer did that.
Instead it looks like the photographer used a little fill flash to lighten the face of JJ Cale (otherwise there would a big shadow on his face from the hat which isn't there).

Oooh, that looks really bad. I can barely make out the man in the back of the truck! You're right, the sun should have been behind them. That has to have been some bad photography there, or a mistake.

Hey, it looks like high noon to me. Darn close. I don't know where Escondido is, but I'd guess Mexico or California. That makes me think about a desert. The picture may have been done this way intentionally to evoke that "high noon" hot desert feeling.
Then again, it sure caught YOUR attention, didn't it?

Purpose when ever or or whatever a photographer puts in the picture always has a reason.

with the sun to their faces you may not have been able to see the detail with as much clarity as with the shadows in play.....photographers are professionals so i'd say that this was intentional

They got what they wanted. This was only one of perhaps a hundred shots. A virtual commitee decides these things.
