A minister said at bible study one evening that the reason why people are afraid of dying is because you're afraid of the unknown. We're secure in our salvation but dying is something that, no matter how many people have come "back" from the dead, it's still something that can't be explained. What do you think?

To clarify, the first sentence is what the minister spoke about, without too much detail. The next sentence after that was what I was thinking about, as one of the answerers said, mortal death.

Most Christians (and some other religions) say that heaven is a place of perfect peace, and that meeting Jesus and going there cannot ever be topped by any other experience.

They also claim to be 100% sure of their belief and faith in heaven and hell and salvation.

So, what else do they need to know to not fear death?

I submit that they are not as sure of their beliefs as they are telling themselves they are. Just my opinion.

People look forward to going to heaven because it is promised as an eternal vacation. But Dieing is a completely different matter. Dieing not only encompasses the loss of your loved ones, but also the fact that you could be wrong. There are so many different ideas about the afterlife, and being confronted with death brings about the realization in people that there might not be a heaven, and that they could have been wrong about their entire life. They stood by (or not) their faith throughout their life, defending it, making sacrifices for it, and then to think that there is a possibility that they were defending a lie, and that there is no god, no afterlife, no heaven, is a justifiable scary thought for many.

The Bible tells us that when God created the first humans, he put “a sense of eternity in their hearts.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11, Beck) However, the Creator gave man’s first parents more than a desire to live forever; he also gave them the opportunity to do so. They were created with a perfect body and mind, and they enjoyed living in a peaceful environment. The Creator purposed that these first humans live forever and that in time the earth be filled with their perfect offspring.—Genesis 1:28; 2:15.

Life without a finish line was, however, conditional. It depended upon obedience to God. If Adam disobeyed God, he would “positively die.” (Genesis 2:16, 17) Tragically, the first humans did disobey. (Genesis 3:1-6) In doing so, they became sinners, for “sin is lawlessness.” (1 John 3:4) As a result, they no longer had the prospect of eternal life, for “the wages sin pays is death.” (Romans 6:23) Therefore, when pronouncing sentence upon the first humans, God said: “Dust you are and to dust you will return.”—Genesis 3:19.

For those who's Salvation is Assured, that is they Know they are going to Heaven, mortal death is not a fear. But most do still have that fear of "the process"...the lingering and suffering business... that is normal mortal flesh fear... and I would differ with that minister in that no one comes back from mortal death... those who are "revived" by medical procedures were not "dead"... the soul did not leave the body... if it had they would still be dead... The explination of mortal death is simple... when the soul leaves the body and goes to sleep to await the call of Christ... either to join Him... or to the judgment of the lost.

I think it's fear of the unknown, but also fear of HOW we will die...will it hurt? How long will it last? Will we still have things left unfinished? It's the ending of life that also seems scary. At this point, we're all kind of used to living, and don't want to stop any time soon.

I am not afraid to die.
I used to be afraid of flying, and all sorts of stuff, but now I'm not afraid. I don't want to die, because I want to spend as much time enjoying the earth as possible. Its a beautiful place.

Isn't it because they want to continuously think and live life. The story of heaven is a place where these people can continuously be conscience. People are greedy and want the full benifit of life plus heaven to top it all off.People want to be immortal!

That is an interesting thought. I am not afraid for my salvation, so that part I am not afraid to die for. My reason for not wanting to die is for my kids, I want to be here for them.
