Does anyone know of a breeder or someone selling chocolate labs in the Gainesville, Florida area? I've searched on the net for breeders and labs for sale, but most either don't have any reasonably aged puppies, or want too much for a lab. I am looking for a male puppy (that is just off weaning...~8 weeks).

Just for the record: I do understand that purchasing a lab from a breeder will cost more money. I just don't think that $1,500 is a reasonable price to pay. =)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for all the responses, but I've already looked in the local newspaper (and papers for the surrounding area), checked all the local shelters and rescues, and checked all the websites that you mentioned. =(

I don't want to show this dog...I simply want a great companion/watchdog/friend for me and my family.

I have paid twice that amount for a Lab puppy. It all depends on what is in the pups background, and what you intend to do with the pup.
I would agree that $1500 is to much if your dog is never going to see anything past the end of the couch. Dogs from the rescue shelters are very good at that.
But if your intention is to win breed at Westminster or win the National open, $1500 becomes a drop in the bucket of what you are going to be spending on your dog. The fact that color is your first priority tells me that you should be looking toward a dog from the shelter however.

local animal shelters have chocolate labs frequently. Try petfinder.com, thats how i found my golden retriever...i didnt want to pay a breeders price either, and found a purebred golden at a dog rescue place and paid only $200 instead of $2000.

Google chocolate lab rescue, also.

$1500 not reasonable? ( you answered your own question) breeders are in it for the money!! Don't give in! Check local shelters, Lab rescues or http://www.petfinder.com/ they are a great resource! I guarantee you will find a lab puppy through some sort of rescue unfortunately no breed of dog is immune from irresponsible owners.
