Dry food should be available at all times and supplemented with a bit of wet. I just saw a show today about how only dry food causes the urine to become very concentrated and the animal simply cannnot drink enough water to keep ahead of it. The result is an increase in urinary tract problems for cats over what was seen in years gone by. A bit of both is best for your cat.
In the short term, like if you are going away for a day or two, dry food is the only alternative -- but not for the long haul or as an exclusive diet.

Dry is better because when cats chew crunchy food it develops their teeth and less likely to have dental problems later in life. Wet food I give my cat as a treat, even tuna as a treat once in a while. Vets will tell you the same thing unless of course your cat is sick and won't eat the dry food then offer the canned.

Dry food has more nutrients the cat needs than canned food so it is more important than canned food, which isn't bad for them either, but should be more of a treat than a daily thing because sometimes cats' stomachs are sensitive to it and it may give them diarrhea.

Definitely dry food - it's much better at keeping their teeth healthy and clean. Canned food is good to use as a treat on occasion, but can also make them have looser stools and gas.

Certain cats should not have wet food dur to medical problems, but those are generally rare. We give my cat wet as a treat, or when he is sick.

I put a bowl of dry food for all day so they can eat when they want, then I give them 1 packet in morning, 1 packet in evening. Try Meow Mix packets or Friskies packets, not cans. Get Temptations snacks as a treat daily.
