I'd think 'Good on 'em' - about time someone stood up in this nanny state of a country and did what their punters want them do instead of what we're told to do. Publicans need to do something or go out of business - the novelty of non smoking pubs is already wearing thin in Scotland !! xx

Smoking in pubs will be against the law so it must be upheld.I agree that non smokers should be able to drink in a smoke free environment but to ban smoking totally is discrimination.Smoke shelters are being provided but must be off the premises, can have a roof but no sides, which offers no shelter in cold wet weather, and they are costing a fortune to provide. Many pubs will lose custom so the cost of these shelters will not be recouperated.I can understand that some pubs don't have enough rooms to be able to have one as a smokeroom ,so why not have smoking pubs and no smoking pubs then everyone has a choice.Landlords have a hard enough job with drunks, drugs and troublemakers, without the added job of upholding the no smoking law.It will be pub rage next!Smoking isn't healthy i know, but neither is excessive drinking yet pubs now open longer and there are no restrictions on what you can drink. It is against the law to serve someone who is drunk, but how many landlords uphold this. Smoking is a health subject but it doesn't cause the problems of drink, drugs and gambling. We will see what happens when the law comes in.

If a group of pubs decided to break the law, who would be there to help them when they got held up or had a huge fight? The law?! We have all opted to live in a society governed by laws drawn up by a view - we can't pick and chose the ones we want and the ones we don't want.
How would you compensate the workers? The pubs would become event smokier as no none smoking people would ever go in.

This situation hasn't arisen in Ireland or Scotland and is most unlikely to happen in the rest of Britain, since the publicans livelihood would be at stake. People cannot pick and choose what laws to obey. Smokers have selfishly had everything their own way for long enough anyway. Society is changing and moving on. Learn to live with it.

I'd stop going to their pubs.
I love the fact that I can have a drink with friends and not get that feeling that I've spent the evening inside a the armpit of a 60-year old Texan fireman who's just had a really bad night at work.
I live in Scotland; we got the smoking ban in early, and it feels weird as (*&^ when I go to England and people are still smoking in public places.

this is being debated here in our town and personally, i think if the pub has a no smoking rule, then they should have gone somewhere else to smoke. what's the point of having laws if people are just going to break them any time they feel like it. sorry, it's a free country and those of us who don't smoke have the right to breathe clean air. there's enough lung cancer found in people who don't smoke already, my son for one.

Interesting that you should bring this up. It's a hot debate in the town I live in right now. In fact tonight's city council meeting is being held in a larger venue b/c the smoking ban is being challenged and they expect an overflow crowd.
Supporters of the ban say it's their right to breathe clean air at work.
Opponents say the ban is costing too much financially.
Personally I hope they leave the ban alone, but they are trying.

well in Stockport they have a no drinking system off the pub premises, so if you want to drink and smoke at the same time it's going to be a bit of a problem as the way the law is worded you can't smoke on "the premises" so that includes gardens and car parks and you can't drink outside the premises. Political correctness gone mad I reckon!

I would think that they were being very irresponsible about the health of their customers. For years, non-smokers have just had to put up with smoky environments but now, they're finally getting a chance to enjoy smoke free air at their local. I would definitely avoid any chain who refused to enforce the smoking ban and know quite a few others who also would.
