Our cat gets white flakes in her fur during the winter. We regularly treat her for fleas and worms and we often check her but she doesn't seem to have anything abnormal. Does anyone elses cat have this problem and what do you do about it?

My cat does. It's cat dandruff. Regular brushing will help with getting rid of the dry skin. Mine is diabetic so that tends to make the skin a bit drier also.

You can ask the vet about vitamins or natural products to help with the dry skin. Maybe food higher in natural oils?

Do you live in a cold climate and keep the cat indoors with the heat going?

Is it possible your cat has dry skin and is flaking? I would try a hair/coat supplement which can be purchased at a pet supply store. It will easily take a couple weeks to see the difference but it's my guess that's what it might be. If you like to shop online I would recommend going to this site. I iusually get the Linatone product for both my cats & dogs. Their prices are usually very competitive. http://www.jefferspet.com

The other question would be if your cat showing any other symptoms or strange behavior?

Hope this helps

It's like dandruff the same as humans get. It can be caused by a number of reasons such as only eating a dry food diet, having the heating on in the house, and medication.

If your cat is on dry food diet try switching to wet food as its more oily. If your cat doesn't like wet food put a little sun flower oil over her biscuits.

Regular grooming keeps kitty looking good and flake free to

She's got dry skin which is flaking in the form of cat dandruff. Try upping her intake of oily fish. Alternatively, you could give her a supplement of Oil of Evening Primrose, just cut open the capsule and add it to her food.

It sounds like the Feline form of Dandruff! If she only gets it in winter, you probably have heating on and cats love it. They sleep in the warmest place but it really dries their skin. I find daily brushing helps though as it massages the skin. You can also get supplements at any pet store.

I'd ask your Vet's opinion though. He may be able to give you something and also make sure it IS dandruff!

I agree w/ everyone else as it being dandruff, which is very common in pet's in the dry seasons of winter, just like people. There are vitamins you can get from your pet, but sometimes just grooming more often and mixing a little bit of oil (cod, vegetable, etc.) into their food can help.

Have your vet make the call on the not "abnormal" diagnosis. Skin problems can be linked to many internal problems like diabetes and thyroid conditions. It may be something as simple as needing a higher quality food or needing a skin supplement, but it could be a sign of a bigger problem. Good luck to you.

My cat Burnie gets that every winter also. It is no big deal for her. We simply get a seltzer bottle we keep, turn the heater on, fill the bottle halfway with warm water (Not hot) and squirt her with it, and while her fur's still wet, comb every white speck out.

She has dry skin. You need to give her some oil in her food. With a pouch of meat mix in about a dessert spoonful of olive oil. Or give her some oily sardines for dinner. My vet advised primrose oil, but that was expensive and olive oil worked just as well.

My cat developed this problem when he became an adult and we moved him onto adult food.
I enriched his diet by changing to a higher quality food and his flakey skin improved within 2 weeks. He just wasn't getting the right nutrients in his food.
