Hydroelectricity is electricity produced by falling water. This might be at a dam on a river or a falls like Niagara Falls. The moving water is used to turn the generator the same as steam is used in a coal fired plant.

Hydroelectricity is literally, electricity from water. There are many ways that this can be done. The most obvious is with dams or turbines as this is a major source of electricity in use today.
Water wheels may be used, which are placed in a stream or river, and the river causes the wheel to turn creating electricity. This method doesn't have the output of turbines.
Tidal forces are also used to create electricity; the rising and falling of tides powering generators.
It is also possible to directly extract power from a river or stream using electrodes. The water acts as a moving conductor in the earth's magnetic field. Small amounts of electricity can be generated this way.
Any place where there are great quantities of moving water are potential places for the generation of electricity. Used wisely, it can provide great sources of power with little environmental impact. Large dams though, alter the landscape and environment dramatically.
