If your cat has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and is suffering, then, do it the favor of a peaceful end to the suffering.
On the other hand, if the cat appears to be failing, but you haven't gotten a diagnosis, then please spend the money on a vet visit and some basic blood work. You would be surprised how many people turn their cats over to our group, because they are "old and dying" and they don't have the money to put them down. A good number of them require minimal vet care and sometimes a change in diet to turn them around completely.

I would certainly spend the money for a vet exam, blood work, urinalysis etc. to find out if the cat can be treated for a physical problem. 12 yrs in a cat is about 60 in human years and older cats and people may need more medical attention, medication, etc. to help with symptoms of aging.
I am on the Yahoo feline cancer group and people spend extraordinary amounts of money treating cancer with their cats. Personally I feel the cats don't benefit from this. I have seen many humans with cancers undergo treatment. Chemotherapy and radiation made their last year or so miserable and I would not subject my cats to that.

I would never prolong my kitties life, even for how much i love him. I mean people have no way of knowing whether a cat is in pain or not. Maybe he's unhappy and wants to die peacefully. Plus, I don't believe in messing with nature.

It would depend, if the cat were going to be in pain I wouldn't spend the money to prolong his life and make him suffer, but if he was perfectly healthy otherwise I would spend the money to make him live a happier, longer life.

the normal life of a cat is 14 to 15 years, if taken care of properly. i hate to be alittle mean on this matter, but we all dont live forever. if its time for your cat to go " normally" let have a heart to let it go. then get you another one to "try " and take its place
