is he into any sports, hockey, baseball..anything. If so than get him new equpiment. If there is snow where you live than get him a GT, or any kind of slides, something he can use outdoors. Get him a remote control snowmobile if there is snow there, to use outside. Get a basketball net, pair of skates.Find out what hes into like characters and go to the mall and see what they have for 12 year old boys with that character.
If this doesnt help than ask him what he likes, or take him to the mall and let him go in the stores and just pay attention to things he goes to and picks up and get a general idea from there.

Give him a crisp $100 bill. OR If you are on a budget, take the money you would have spent on gifts and put $20 bills into individual envelopes, then get a big box and fill it with popcorn, hide the envelopes in the popcorn then wrap up the box.
As he is eating the popcorn he will find the envelopes with cash!
I did this for my 12 year old last year except I used a big tin container. At first she was like "Okay?" but once she caught on she was so damn happy! She went to the after Christmas sale and was able to get 3 video games instead of one!!!!

Ask him I'm sure he could tell ya, unless he just says video games. LOL
Does he have an mp3 player?
I know its difficult to know what the heck to buy these kids, plus all the good stuffs so expensive now. My 11 year old wants an ipod, she says thats all she wants. I think an mp3 players more like it for that age.
Good Luck with finding him a great gift!

A cage...
Depending upon your relationship to the boy, a subscription to a sports magazine or does he have an IPod or Mp3 player? A giftcard to an online music store, like ITunes is a great gift.

i would get him the guiness book of world records, and a game for the pc, like sims pet editions.
wourld record is good for educational values and he will find it interesting
sims will keep him ocupied for ages as it is a long playing statergy game. he will love it. u could also get him these for a little mini prezzy's and get him somthing really though full, bike, console, gadget. or if u look in argos u can buy a day out activity.

How about tickets to an event; like a football game, basketball game, concert, etc.
Another idea is a digital camera or MP3 player.

12 is plenty old enough for money. Nothing better than opening a small box with like $50 cash in it. In the long run it is cheaper for you too...
