That your expectations go beyond what may be realized. You may get a portion of what you want, the cake, but being able to eat it is desiring too much or more than may be reasonably expected. Literally, if you are given a cake, you want it. If you eat it, it is gone, but you still want it.
You cannot HAVE your cake and eat it TOO.

Here are examples, though perhaps not the best:
You love the garden, you want it year round.
You like being 23 years old (or whatever)
You love two women and want to marry them.

I think Tony P's notation of being mutually exclusive is the most concise description.

You're going to have to choose one of the options presented to you.

An example would be a woman and her wedding cake. She may be torn between eating the cake, and having it to look at. But, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

One options are mutually exclusive,

It means...you can either have your cake, or eat your cake....if you eat it, then you won't have it anymore...hence: you can't have your cake and eat it too.

It simply means that you can't have things both ways. It is one thing , or the other. You have to compromise, you can't have all the benefits of two two things combined, but you have to make a choice of getting the most out of one choice.

I take it to mean that you cant have it all ...... I mean you win a million bucks then you complain that it didnt come with a free B l o w -Job ..... I would say you cant have you cake and it it too .......
