I have a bar that is kind of snug. It is worrying me because the side of my face is swelling and has a hard spot.

YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE IT OUT!!!!

If you leave the jewelry in, the infection will go away as long as you are taking your antibiotics and all will be fine. Keep the area clean with Dial soap and use your sea salt soaks 2-4 times a day to flush out any puss and buildup.

If you take the jewelry out, the infection can get trapped between cartilage layers and under the skin. This can cause a collapse and weakness with the skin and would result in worse pain and more problems than you have know.

As a former body piercer let me give you a little advice. I agree with the people that told you not to take it out. They are correct about the infection not having a way to drain. I disagree with the person that suggested the peroxide. Peroxide can be very drying to a piercing. USE SEA SALT. Not table salt. Also cartilage piercings DO NOT heal in 2 to 4 weeks. It can take anywhere from 3 to 9 months for them to heal. Do not touch your piercing unless you have washed your hands. It would help to know what kind of jewelry you have in. I hope it is a ring as those heal better. If it is stainless steel you could be having a reaction to it. Some people that are sensitive to nickel are also sensitive to stainless steel. So if you do have stainless steel you might go back to the piercer and have them put in titanium or niobium rings. If your piercing does not heal properly you could develop bumps called keloids. These are scar tissue build ups and don't always go away.

Agreeing with everyone telling you not to take it out... had my septum pierced when i was 18, got infected, I took it out... the skin closed up and the infection stayed where it was... I ended up in the emergency room having the infection drained out of my nose,(which by the was hurst way worse than cleaning an infected piercing) on antibiotics. The ER doctor told me if I had left in the ring, and taken anti-biotics it would have cleared up fine, thankfully the scars from that are not visible. The pain was unbearable, and i looked like rudolph.

First of all, don't ever take out a piercing that infected. Then the infection has no where to go. Just make sure that you clean it with hydrogen peroxide (not rubbing alcohol), and use antibacterial soap on it (one without fragrance). Do not put triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) on it. Treat it as a puncture wound. Keep shampoo away from it. It should heal in about a week. When it does heal, take the metal out and clean it with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol and put it back in. It will be sensitive, but you will get over it if you went through the piercing.

Dial soap is an excellent antibacterial soap and recommended for many topical infectious situations. Use it to cleanse the piercing area several times a day, and apply topical and/or oral antibiotics. Clear the infection >before< taking the piercing out, or you'll have a nice knot that may take some time to go away.

dont take it out!!! do not listen tot eh doctor to take it out! taking it out will only close int eh infection and make it worse! its still healing and its still pushing out discharge. if you take otu the jewelry then the discharge will have no where to go making it worse! . plase keep it in. just take the anibiotics and do the sea salt soaks and after care pierce solution liek you shoudl be doing! and if it doesnt go away go to teh PIERCER not the doctor and see what they can do!

DO NOT USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE< NEOSPORIN, OR RUBBING ALCOHOL! that is in bold letters of my aftercare pierce pamphlet when ever i get a new piercing! . tUSING ANY OF THESE WILL ONLY KILL THE GOOD TISSUE AND TAKE LONGER TO HEAL! ! KEEP IT IN NO MATTER WHAT! AND SO THE SEA SALT SOAKS, ect!
good luck!

listen to the piercer not the doctor!

Soak it in warm salt water it will help clean it and draw out infection. If the antibiotics do not help in a few days then I would remove it.
