We had a seriously heated debate that erupted in our book club discussion form today concerning Nat Turner. Just a reminder: Nat Turner was a Va. slave that led a bruttal rebellion that attempted to overthrow slavery.

Here is the question: Do you all think that Nat Turner was a terrorist/murderer or do you think that he was a revolutionary? (I am not going to write anymore because I do not want to bias your thoughts with my opinion and commentary, I am purely interested to see what other peoples views are.) Please write thoughtful, clear explanations for your point of view. Feel free to use examples and the length of your blogs do not matter to me because I love to read.

I think Nat Turner was a hero and here's why: given the context, he committed a truly heroic act. Had he not been enslaved and mistreated, he most likely would have lived out his entire life without hurting anyone.

Think of it this way: If someone sold you into slavery against your will, shipped you to another country, where you were bought by people who didn't regard you as human, where you were made to work like an animal with no compensation, how do you think all of that would make you feel? It would make me feel like killing someone.

Great question.
