If you prefer the natural route, I can recommend Zicam nasal swabs. Basically, Zicam is a zinc preparation in a gel base, you swab it inside your nose and it is absorbed directly into the blood stream through your mucous membranes in the nose. As zinc is destroyed in stomach acids, using zinc tablets or lozenges is pretty much a waste of money. The good thing about zinc is that it inhibits the replication of viruses. So it can prevent a cold if used prophylactically and can drastically reduce the lifespan of the common cold.
OTC medications affect different people in different ways and there are so many of them, you will have to test each one to find the one most effective for you. None of them however, have the ability to decrease the length of the cold or prevent one, they only make the symptoms bearable.
