Why is your dog in the garage? That's not a home for a dog, that's a prison sentence.

Buy a crate. Crate him inside your house while you are away or when you can't watch him.

And many dogs simply can't hold it for longer than 3-4 hours on a regular basis. If your dog is being left alone for longer than that, then you have unreal expectations for your dog. Hire someone to come walk him or get him into doggie day care. It will stop the accidents and be fabulous for your dog.

And to reiterate, the first answerer is a moron. Hitting your dog solves nothing. It actually creates more fear of continual abuse. People who spank and hit dogs should have their pets taken away and be punished in the same manner they punish their dog.

If the dog is left in garage for hours and hours all day with no way to get outside, it will have no option but to potty in the garage.

If you don't want it going potty in there, you'll need to train it, and allow it time outside to properly relieve itself.

DO NOT HIT YOUR DOG, that teaches it nothing except ot be afraid of you.

We also suggest that dog owners NOT train their dogs to go on wee-wee pads or newspaper, because this trains the dog to eliminate inside your house instead of outside. The dog cannot distinguish between it being OK to pee on the pad, and not on any other paper or fabric on the floor...

To train a dog to go outside, you need to first put the dog on a feeding schedule. We suggest feeding the dog at the SAME TIME every day. This helps to "program" his bowels and bladder to regular feeding and elimination times.

Don't leave food out for the dog all day. If he eats all day, he'll poop all day. But keep plenty of fresh water available to him.

Dogs usually have to potty about 10-15 minutes after they eat, when they first wake up in the morning, and when they wake up from a nap. Use these opportune times to take the pooch outside. As soon as he goes potty, praise him a lot for being a good dog.

Dogs will also walk in tight circles with their nose to the ground when they have to go to potty. Whenever you see this behavior ask the dog, "potty outside?" and take him out immediately. Again, as soon as he goes potty, praise him a lot for being a good dog.

If you're consistent and vigilant he should be house-trained in no time.

a soft swat on the butt will not harm the dog, however it is actually the "sound"that scares the dog.so just swatting a newspaper on the floor behind him while showing him what he did wrong is good enough.if you're locking him in garage then get training pads.you'll have a hard time breaking him.now if you're treating him as a normal house dog then just take him out after eating until he poops, and be sure to praise him for doing it out doors.dogs are just like children, they require attention and understanding.
