You are taught to follow it initially.
But as you become proficient, you internalize it.
When this happens, you do not merely accept it as something imposed from the outside, but gain an internal understanding of the reasons behind its principles and teachings, and learn to love them as your own.

I follow football because my boyfriend loves football and I love my boyfriend.
But I followed football when I was a kid because I LOVED Joe Montana, not because my parents were huge football fans. They were sort of indifferent to football - not huge fans, but would watch important games.

In football a different team wins every year. In religion, only one team will win - you just better hope you are on that team.
