What are the origins of this saying. Does anybody know how it came about?

For centuries the British pound sterling was the strongest currency in the world. An investment in pounds was "sound"--that is, safe and secure.

the term sound as a pound was invented by a friend of mine at school in 1971 in Allerton South Liverpool England, when we were 11 years old. There are theories that the phrase is to do with currency, and how strong the pound was. In reality my friend began saying this phrase to mean everything was fine and used the words because sound and pound rhymed and nothing more, Now it seems to have traveled the world so that everyone appears to know this phrase.
