The recipe for the absinthe you speak of is long lost, but was believed to have possibly contained some byproduct chemical that caused the hallucinations. The only reason it is illegal today in the US is because the FDA is lazy and won't approve the drink, despite it being sold almost everywhere in Europe.

Drink enough that your body becomes dependent on it and then stop drinking alcohol, you might hallucinate. That is the only way absinthe can cause hallucinations because it is just another alcoholic drink. If you really want to hallucinate, you are going to have to use something else because any hallucinations you have from it are either because someone drugged it or you are having a placebo effect.

Current available absinthes range from garbage to pretty good, and the whole 'scene' with the fountain and spoons and ice and sugar is fun... I just don't really care for the anise flavor.

From Wikipedia -

"At the height of this popularity, absinthe was portrayed as a dangerously addictive, psychoactive drug; the chemical thujone was blamed for most of its deleterious effects. By 1915, it was banned in a number of European countries and the United States. Even though it was vilified, no evidence shows it to be any more dangerous than ordinary alcohol."

If you want to really get the story, check this out:

Absinthe was (back in the 1800's) the cheapest way to buy strong spirits, and the temptation to 'cut' it with eye-rattling substances, coupled with the lack of sanitation and health codes could result in some combos featuring wood alcohol, tincture of opium, turpentine and numerous other questionable adulterants.

Sounds like something the nitwits who breathe gasoline or paint thinner would use as a chaser...

No. Thanks.

Best wishes!
