It's all about marketing....

Real hash browns are cooked on a grill and have a free form shape... typically flat and rectagular about the width and length of the spatula flipping the potatoes.

Processed hash browns come in different shapes... McDonald's for example is an elongated oval. When I lived in the dorms we had triangular hash browns that were great... deep fried, nice golden brown and crispy along the edges and the center was soft and potatoey... sort of like a tater tot, but triangular.

Does that make a tater tot a hash brown?

Hash browns are no good for you. Don't worry about what everyone else is saying. Just try to eat healthy. Recently that is exactly what I've been tryign to do...staying away from unhleathy fast food, etc. My first nutritional food ever drank on purpose was crystal light yesterday. Everyone should try crystal light, healthy and tastes really good. Try a free sample of it at http://urlx.org/89ab5 . You won't regret it.

Well the are obviously synthetic .. because the original hash browns came from frying up left over potato with onions and bacon!! with an egg on top!!

If they're triangular, they're preformed and processed. A real serving of hashbrowns has no shape or discernible edges.

I see rectangular ones in the frozen food aisle.

Chicken is round and fish is sqaure, veal is oval and pork is a weird shape
