yes, they were asked to leave the plane and refused, police had to be called, police asked them to leave they refused,
What do you or anyone expect the police to do.
None of the other 100's clerics were detained, so what did these do or say to draw all the attention to them over the others in the airport at that exact time.
It looks like they were doing this on purpose to cause a scene

From the story you provided, assuming the information in the story is correct, I think there is enough reason for the 6 to be removed from the plane. Wheather or not they needed to be handcuffed is a matter of what the normal protocall of the airline is. It sounds as if there were a few factors that led to the suspicion of these men. Although, I am not sure the same actions would have occurred if the men were white, black hispanic etc.

Probably due to the fact that, and this is from the link you supply
"He also said some witnesses reported the men were making anti-American statements involving the Iraq war, asked to change seats once inside the cabin, that one requested an extender to make his seat belt larger even though he did not appear to need it and that in general "there was some peculiar behavior"."
The link you post also says it's not known if they were handcuffed, only some civil rights activist has claimed this, but that if they were it was because normal procedures were followed.
Also,
1) How do they face Mecca in a plane?
2) How do they pray properly without affecting plane security by blocking the aisles

I'm not sure if you read the full story because it says why they were handcuffed. I would be glad if a couple of people making anti-American comments and praying out loud on plane were handcuffed and taken off the plane. The following is the last paragraph of the story.
Hogan said the men were questioned by local police, the FBI and federal security officials and released. Under normal procedures, he said, people taken off a flight under those circumstances would have been handcuffed, though he did not know if they were in this case.

It looks as though it was a set-up.
The clerics wanted to be led off the plane in handcuffs.
