If you want to buy a good rod, try a 6 to 7 foot ugly stik by shakespeare

if you want great line, try Cajun line by Shakespeare or spiderwire (between 8 & 12 lbs would be best)...fire line isnt too bad either

Where did you hook them? The mouth, tongue, eyes, throat, etc...? How deep were you fishing? How long were they out of the water? If you deep hook a fish just cut the line as close the eye of the hook as you can and get the fish back into the water. Most hooks will rust out. Don't try and get the hook out. You will just increase the chances of killing the fish. When taking fish out of the water don't lay them on anything. This will stress them out and take away their slime coat. The fish may seem fine when you release it but it will develop sores later on. Release the fish ASAP and avoid handling the fish unless you need to support it's body but wet your hands first and handle it as little as possible. If you want to take a picture keep it in the water while you get the camera ready then when it's all set take the fish out of the water snap the picture and put the fish back into the water and revive it. Don't yank it back and forth. Just slowly move it forward in the water to help acclimate it. When fighting a fish the building and releasing of lactic acid in their bodies can really hurt them. Also, when bringing a fish up from deeper water can effect their air bladders and these fish need to be needled properly to release the built up air. If a fish is full of air most of the time they can't swim back down unless needled. So many people see a fish swim away and think it's fine. Fish can die 24-48 hours later. You need to take extreme care with these fish and all fish for that matter. Even if one species seems more durable then another. Just take special care of every fish you catch no matter the size or kind to increase it's survival rate. Hope this helps...

i have alot of success with jerkbaits, or banjo minnow imitating plastics. they work all the time early to mid season. after it starts to get really hot and later in the season, i switch to the plastic worm and crankbaits, and i fish them slow and deep. once it nears fall i go back to jerkbaits and live baits. i do this every year and everywhere, and though i might not catch as many as i do early in the season, i never go home empty handed. the other lure to use when everything is just rough is the spinnerbait, just reel it in, no tricks, pauses, or anything, its a fool proof lure. the best advice is to just have confidence and appreciate that your not working or at home.

I like to use Live minnows.Hook em' through the lips or back, cast out and leave the bail open. When the line starts going,Shut the the bail, wait for the slack to take up,and set the hook.Better done from a boat, but it works from shore too.
