How bad is it to take a Tylenol PM every night to get to sleep?

in addition to the issue of becoming dependent on it to sleep, your body could also become accustomed to the acetaminophen (the Tylenol part). If you try to stop taking it, you could get rebound headaches, which are a NIGHTMARE.

You should never take more than 2000mg/day of any Tylenol or acetaminophen product. Many items on the market today have "Tylenol" in them, so figure out how much Tylenol you are actually ingesting per day. If you are taking under 2000mg you should be OK, but you should know that Tylenol is metabolized through the liver and it is hard on the liver. Tylenol PM also has Benadryl in it and Benadryl is notorious for causing difficult in thinking with use. It should never be taken by older adults. I personally think there are probably much safer drugs out there for sleep than Tylenol PM, but it's your body.

If you take it every night you are going to build up a dependence on sleep aids. The acetaminophen that is in Tylenol really isn't good for your liver. If you are taking it every night you may actually be causing your self to have long term problems in the future. Try to lay down for bed a Little earlier. This way you have plenty of time to fall asleep. One thing that usually helps me is a nice warm shower. If I take a warm enough shower and go straight into bed after drying off , I usually doze off right away.
Please reconsider the Tylenol P.M. every night..you will regret it. Doctor's now have access to non-habit forming sleep aids. So if you really are having that much trouble falling asleep you should see a doc.....make a routine for your self!!

It may cause liver damage if you take it for a long term. The acetaminophen has been found to cause damage in the liver if you take the maximum dosage on a daily basis. But I've heard that this is something that happens after a LONG time of taking it and also if you are a drinker, then you're more at risk. If you're taking medication just to fall asleep and you have no pain, you may want to consider taking sleeping aids without pain relievers instead. I've used Melatonin which is an all natural type of sleeping pill and I've found that it worked fine for me. You can find it at any vitamin shop or even at your local Target or Walgreen's. It's best if you were to stay away from the pain relievers just to be on the safe side, unless you really need them.

Is Tylenol PM habit-forming?
The active ingredients in Tylenol PM are not considered habit-forming. Using Tylenol PM beyond the two week time period listed on the package label is not recommended unless directed by your doctor.

If sleeplessness persists continuously for more than two weeks, consult your physician. Insomnia may be a symptom of a serious underlying medical illness. Do not take Tylenol PM for pain for more than ten days or for a fever for more than three days unless directed by a doctor.

If you have chronic insomnia, contact your doctor to determine the cause of your sleeplessness and appropriate treatment.

The real truth--it is not bad. Tolerance can develop to the sleep agent after awhile (it is an antihistamine-non addictive). The pain killing agent tylenol (acetaminophen-also not addictive) will not hurt your liver unless you take over 4000mg per day on a consistent basis, have underlying liver problems, or mix with large amount of alcohol (especially red wine) on a consistent basis. If you do not need the pain killer portion, try original formula unisom (white and orange box) or melatonin as a sleep agent (both non habit forming).

Its pretty bad, the acetaminaphin in tylenol can damage your liver pretty badly. If your having trouble sleeping there are herbal teas that can help, some over the counter sleep aids without extra medicines that you dont need. If you cant find something strong enough over the counter your doctor can perscribe you something, please dont continue to damage your liver there are better ways to get to sleep.

I don't know. I take one benedryl (dipthehydramine) capsule every night to help me sleep. (same stuff as sleep aid in Tylenol PM.) Has extra benefit of keeping my allergies under control. I can sleep without it without problems. It just helps me sleep more soundly as I am a light sleeper otherwise.

the tylenol is bad.
just go find a pure diphenhydramine pill, nix the tylenol
diphenhydrinate is just an antihistamine.... its not addictive..
and not hard on your body or anything
