I am sick and went to the doctor yesterday. After he handed my prescriptions he said 'I really want to push fluids on you'. The last thing I feel like doing is drinking. Why is it the moment you don't feel well, you're told to drink a lot of fluids?

Suppose you have a runny nose or have been puking or diarrhea. Water is leaving you faster than normal through these pathways, and unless you keep putting it back in you will get dehydrated on top of your other problems. People with chronic diarrhea can die from dehydration, although this isn't common any more. If your doctor tells you to drink, it generally means that you should drink. If you just puke every time you drink something, then it is an exercise in futility to try to keep yourself hydrated and you should talk to your doctor again. He'll either give you anti-nausea medication, or in certain extreme cases of dehydration, tell you to go to the hospital and get an IV.

That's the reason. You have to force yourself or you will get dehydrated and that just makes everything worse. You HAVE to drink, drink, drink. Gets the virus out of your system faster and you'll feel better sooner. Don't drink, and it will take forever to get the virus out and you will just lie in bed and get weaker and weaker and wonder why, when you've been to the doctor and your on medications.
