Our motto is 15 min in /15 min out and it has always worked for us. Till he gets the hang of things. you let them eat or drink for 15 mins then take food water away, after 15 mins take them out let them do there business. Keep him on a schedule. Crate him can also help dogs don;t like to go where they have to sleep.

Hello. Erin is right. At first taking your dog out about every 15 mins or so just may help. You definately want to take him out after he eats, plays and sleeps. Crate training is a wonderful thing for dogs. I use to think it was horrible keeping them in there; actually it's just the opposite. The crate/kennel is like a den to your dog. When he is in there, no one should bother him, it's his space. Also, never ever use the crate as a form of punishment. Remember this is his happy place. You can begin slowly training your dog to his crate by placing a piece of his favorite treat in the crate. As soon as you see the dog going to go into the crate, tell him what a good boy he is. Keep this up until he goes all the way in, then slowly close the door to the crate/kennel. Only leave him in there a few minutes, and repeat. Yes it is true, dogs will not soil where they sleep, so you want to be sure the crate/kennel is only big enough for him to sit/stand/lay down in. It can be a little bigger than that, but not too much. If he has room to go to the back of the kennel and go potty without laying in it, he will. This defeats the purpose. Crating it great when you work all day or have to leave for awhile. Yes, a one year old Basset can hold it until you come home and let him out. Good luck.

No it's not too late.
Go back to the beginning, just as if he was a puppy. Supervise him constantly when loose indoors, and have a place to put him (like a crate) when you can't watch him. Establish a routine for going out, make sure you go out with him so that you can praise and reward him for messing outside. If you just put him out by himself, he won't know what he's out there for. Don't give him the opportunity to mess indoors, take the attitude that if he does it's your fault for not watching him closely enough. Don't be too quick to give him freedom of the whole house, let him earn it a bit at a time with his good behavior.
Basset Hounds can be difficult to housebreak, consistency and supervision is the key.
Feel free to email me if you have any more questions about Basset Hounds.

No, it is not too late!
This pup is going to be sooo happy to be indoors! Poor dog!
Take him out once an hour, to the place you want him to eliminate. When he does, praise, praise, praise.
Take him out as often as you can in the days following until he figures out that you want him to eliminate there. It won't take long.
If he has accidents in the house, don't punish him. Just give him a GENTLE no, and take him immediately to the place you want him to eliminate. Clean the area with an enzyme based cleaner to prevent him from using that spot again.
You should not leave him with full run of the house until he is fully potty trained when you are not home. Crating is one option, or sectioning him off in the house, like the kitchen for example, is another. Babygates are a useful tool if you're not inclined to crate.
Pay close attention to his potty schedule. Make note of when he does #1 and #2, and it will likely follow a pattern. Initially, cater to his pattern, then gradually adjust his schedule to fit yours.
Be patient, it will be a process!
I am quite partial to hounds myself - give him a "roooo" once in awhile and see his reaction!
Congratulations on your new pup!

It's never too late to train a dog to go potty outside. Here is what we recommend:
We actually suggest that dog owners NOT train their dogs to go on wee-wee pads or newspaper, because this trains the dog to eliminate inside your house instead of outside. The dog cannot distinguish between it being OK to pee on the pad, and not on any other paper or fabric on the floor...
To train a dog to go outside, you need to first put the dog on a feeding schedule. We suggest feeding the dog at the SAME TIME every day. This helps to "program" his bowels and bladder to regular feeding and elimination times.
Don't leave food out for the dog all day. If he eats all day, he'll poop all day. But keep plenty of fresh water available to him.
Dogs usually have to potty about 10-15 minutes after they eat, when they first wake up in the morning, and when they wake up from a nap. Use these opportune times to take the pooch outside. As soon as he goes potty, praise him a lot for being a good dog.
Dogs will also walk in tight circles with their nose to the ground when they have to go to potty. Whenever you see this behavior ask the dog, "potty outside?" and take him out immediately. Again, as soon as he goes potty, praise him a lot for being a good dog.
If you're consistent and vigilant he should be house-trained in no time.
