I didn't have to hint. My now husband asked me to go ring shopping after 1 month of dating. I was 25 and he was 32 at the time. We went together and found the perfect engagement and wedding rings. 3 months later he proposed at a Christmas charity event in front of a large room full of people! We've been married 1 year now, together for 3 years total.

I told him straight out what I'd like and told him I want a small diamond, not something that's going to make it impossible to use my hand for fear of breaking my ring. If he comes back with something different, it's not that big a deal to me, but I know he listened, and probably took notes. LOL.
I'd rather hint, then get something I hate, and I'd rather have him propose with a twist-tie from a breadbag (something I told him, with much laughter) than have him be all stressed about getting the "wrong" ring.
After all, it's about the love and thought, not the rock.

Sort of input. He would every now and then ask an off the wall question about my preferences, and had his sister have me try on her ring. None of which was close enough together for me to notice. He told me after that he had it all picked out when I said white gold, he had already gotten yellow gold, and he had to go back and trade it for white gold. I had no clue the proposal was coming, much less that he had gotten a ring.
He did a perfect job, I couldn't have picked a more beautiful ring for myself.

I had some input. Basically, what color band I wanted and what cuts I didn't like. The ring is beautiful. Princess cut, kite style with 24 smaller diamonds. I honestly wouldn't get anything else - when I was getting it resized, I looked around and didn't find anything I liked more.

No, I didn't need to hint. He took me ring shopping and we picked it out together. I love it, because not only did it come from him, but also because it's not your stereotypical "diamond" engagement ring. It's a 3 stone ring with a round cut sapphire in the middle and diamond accents on both sides of the sapphire.

When I was on the verge of getting engaged with my husband, I told him all I wanted was a ring with it's own "sound effect". I wanted a ring that made me think 'SWOOSH' when I saw it. I gave him no other details- diamond cut, color- nothing! And He found the Most Beautiful ring!! It looks like a swirly hurricane in white gold and diamonds. It is perfect and He picked it out himself!!

I had mentioned that I would like a solitaire quite some time before he ended up proposing. Other than that, it was a complete surprise and I really like it. I would much prefer to get a surprise because it is HIS money and he IS the one proposing so I feel it should be his choice. Then again, I'm not fussy and the thought and love he put into it counts more to me than what the ring looks like. But that's just me.

We actually had my set & his ring custom made so they were not only unique but also matched. My hubby knows tools not jewellery so to trust him with such a decision wasn't too good of an idea.
It worked out very well, I got exactly what I wanted, he got something he liked and they matched. The best part was that it wasn't even a huge finanicial stretch (all 3 rings cost around $3000.00).
And when we went to pick them up that is when my hubby got down on 1 knee & proposed with the ring. It was great!!

I didnt hint at all. He bought it all by himself, a nice oval 1 carat diamond, set on 18 carat white gold band that he bought when overseas. Yes it was a total surprise when he gave it to me and I love it, it is the most beautiful ring I've ever seen. Everyone gives me loads and loads of compliments sometimes more than once, and most everyone is surprised to learn that he bought it without me around or me hinting. lol.

It was a total surprise. The only thing I told him was that I wanted a yellow gold band (I think is the most traditional). As for the actual ring...he picked it out - he picked princess cut. It is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I couldn't have asked for anything better....he is the best and did a wonderful job!
