The green card allows you to work and live in the US. You do need to wait the 5 years to become a citizen then you can apply for a US Passport. In the meantime, you use the passport issued to you by your country and you can use that and your green card to get back in the US. Happy travels!

You have to use your old passport. A green card doesn't get you a US passport, you need to be a US citizen to get that.

A passport is fine and your green card is also going to be fine, they are both entry documents. The law is going to have to be changed to be able to enforce every U.S. Citizen to present a Passport to enter the U.S. This is a whole other topic, let me get my information ready.

Passports are for citizens only. You get yours from your country.
