Definitely! It can also cause pain at any other time of the day or night. My mother has rheumatoid arthritis and is in constant pain which seems to intensify at night. Sounds as if you need to visit a rheumatologist for further evaluation.

I agree with Lord M ... yes it can but you should have an MRI scan to check that it isn't a disc bulging. I have two in my neck and a weak lower back - Degenerative Disc Disease - but I have worked hard on an exercise regime to help the problem. I highly recommend strengthening your abominal muscles ... you can do this at home. The best exercise I have found, is to lie on the floor with your legs bent, and push your spine against the floor tightening your stomach muscles at the same time. Hold for as long as you can and then release. Do this as much as you can.
Also, check your bed. You need to make sure that your head is level with your shoulders. I use a mattress topper and it supports me really well. Good pillows are imperative. And keep warm!
Whether it is arthritis or something spinal like bulging discs, these things really help. I wish you well!

Yes, very much so. The best thing to do is try to 'switch sides' the best you can, as often as you can. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis (my bones have grown together/started in my spine) and I hurt most during my inactive periods. Sleeping is usually a horror. It's so hard to do, but I refuse to mess my head up with prescribed pain killers that never help anyway. My body may be gone but, I'm keeping my mind ;-) The best thing I've 'personally' found for my pain is generic migraine/headache tablets. Basically, the generic 'Excedrin' kind. If I take it 4 times a day I don't have to take anything else for inflammation or pain. When I run out, usually the 3rd day, I can't even walk because my bones are so weak. I take these generic excedrin and I can walk! It's really weird. They work so much better (for me) than any Oxycontin, Percocet, Morphine, MS Contin, etc... and they don't mess me up. Weird, huh? Good Luck :-)

Honey, arthritis can cause pain anytime. Although it's been shown that people with arthritis/ or carpal tunnel syndrome experience pain when it 's especially cold, or it's going to rain.
It all really depends on how well you take care of your body. Too much twisting and turning, lifting or other strenuous work can over-exhert the spine.

Arthritis is inflammation. Seeing that inflammation occurs around the clock, so does the pain that goes with it. I've had arthritis in my spine for 13yrs & I can tell you from experience, it hurts all the time, but especially when it's damp or the weather is changing

Yes, but arthritis may not be the cause of your back pain.
Go see your doctor. I had chronic pain once and had to have an operation to trim down a disc that was pushing on my spinal column. When it recurred some years later it was sorted out with physiotherapy........much better!
Good luck.

It can but, is usually the body attempting to protect the area which will bring about the formation of arthritic deposits in that affected area. Have you had the problem checked out yet?
You give little information to why you considered arthritis as a possibility.

It certainly can, the pain never gives up that I can tell you, you need to see your Dr and get x-rayed to see how bad the degeneration has got to, strong painkillers-- Kapake-- and I find that a TENS unit does help-- the quack remedies-- cider vinegar-- tincture of toad-- etc are a waste of time. I find that a warm dry climate takes away a lot of the pain but when its cold and damp--!!! keep warm and keep mobile.
