That's a file extension that a program called WinRAR uses. WinRAR is almost like WinZip, but a lot better. Download WinRAR and then you can extract the program and use it to its full potential.

A RAR file is a file that holds one or more files in a compresses format to make them quicker to download. You will need a software (such as WinRAR) to extract the original file(s) out of the RAR file. Search on Download.com and you will find several RAR programs.
Once you have extracted the file(s), they will have their real extensions (mp3, avi, etc.).

.
You "OPEN WITH" WIN.rar
Download it from here:
http://www.download.com/3000-2250-10007677.html
or get it here:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
If you download it to your desktop, you can later drag it to your Programs folder
Then, when you get a file with the .rar extension, you will only need to double click the file;
or
RIGHT click the file > and select "Open With" WinRar.
You may try to change the file extension to the format used by your unzipping programs
like .zip
but it may or may-not work. Depends on your pc.
It IS ok to have more than one unzip utility on your pc without conflict. One will be the default, but you can always use the Open With selection feature, as above.
:)
