What if I sincerely believe that Hugh Heffner is my god and Playboy magazine is my holy book? Is my sincerity enough to save me? Or can I be sincerely wrong and suffer eternal consequences?

Rom 10:1 Brothers, the goodwill of my heart and my supplication to God for them are, indeed, for their salvation. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God; but not according to accurate knowledge; 3 for, because of not knowing the righteousness of God but seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the Law, so that everyone exercising faith may have righteousness.

zeal and sincerity won't save the Jews, and it won't save you.

Sorry dude.

If Hugh Hefner could save a person, then Jesus Christ died in vain.

As another questioner posed here today, Jim Jones' followers honestly thought they were following the true Messiah. So did the Branch Davidians. So did Charles Manson's followers. None of these people can save.

It's not our faith that saves us, it's the one upon whom we've focused our faith. Muslims are convinced Mohammed is God's true prophet; Christians are convinced Jesus Christ is the Savior of all those who believe; Jews are convinced the Messiah hasn't yet come. Sadly, only one can be right.

Peace.

Sincerity of belief is generally considered something positive, and certainly insincere belief is nothing to admire, but independent of other factors it is a potential disaster area.

The object of the sincere belief matters a great deal too.
That's what makes a belief false or true, not its depth, seriousness or heartfeltness.

For sincere belief and bad consequences, consider the simple but tragic:
"I didn't think it was loaded."

If that is what you believe, then yes, you will be suffering eternal consequences. False beliefs are no truer just because they are sincere. Turn to God, through Jesus. God bless.

Go to Romans 10th chapter and start reading in the 9th verse. After that go to Saint John and the 3rd chapter start in the 3 verse then go to the 7th chapter starting in the 36th verse and read to the end. then go to mark and read the 16th chapter and the 15th verse this should tell you the truth about what makes the diffenence

What we believe is a matter of relativity. There are two kinds of truths...a relative truth, meaning truth from our personal points of view, and absolute truths, meaning truths that stand true without any personal involvements...
Now, religion, in my opinion consists of both of these types of truths...some absolute, some relative...
If it is 'absolutely' true that there are eternal consequences, then your beliefs, which are relative, can lead to bad consequences. BUT, if it is NOT 'absolutely' true that there are eternal consequences, then your sincere beliefs will not lead to bad consequences...
It is a matter of what is, or is not, an absolute truth...in terms of suffering eternal consequences, according to religion...I am not able to say if THAT is an absolute or relative truth, i am afraid.
Great question...made me think :S

Yes, you can be sincerely wrong and suffer eternal consequesces.

The bible states this very clearly, no room for doubt. There is only one way and no matter how sincerely we may believe that there are many ways, the bible states that there is only one way.

You could sincerely believe a loaded gun is unloaded. But if you put it to your head and pull the trigger, it doesnt matter how sincere you are, you will die. The point is when it comes to where we put our confidence, what matters is whether or not it is true, not how sincere we are.

If you believe this way, then Hitler should be rewarded because He sincerely believed in what he was doing. There is even though a lot deny it, an absolute truth, and it is by that truth that we will be either rewarded or judged.

Sincerity means nothing if its belief in the wrong thing. Nothing you believe about God or disbelieve changes who He really is. If I sincerely believe that you are a 45 yr old woman in Toronto, does that change who you really are? No.... Does that mean I even KNOW who you are? No...

God created us, we did not create Him.
