In general terms, I'd say keep things simple. Don't mount images on different coloured paper etc. -try to keep it the same. Also, avoid mounting black images on white paper & vice versa as it can be distracting, though generally I think using white paper is best.

Another tip my tutor helped me with was to put your best work a few pages into the portfolio -not at the start, and then put your less good work at the end. This is because most people who look at your portfolio will know whether they like what they see quite quickly (and if you use your best work first, then the following things will only lessen the good impression!)

I've been in several classes involving photographic portfolios and what I've gathered is this....

You should use between 15-20 images printed at least 8x10, probably bigger11x14. They should all be mounted on a similar color matboard inside of a portfolio book. Black is best IMO.

The images themselves should show your creativity and versatility. This means you should show something from all aspects of photography even if you don't plan to pursue all types. This means....portraits, landscapes, photojournalistic, fashion, wedding, product, sports, etc.

Contrary to another answer here, I've always been told that your very best two images should be the first and last. This is because the first one is their first impression of you, and the last one should leave them wanting to see more....

hope this helps!

what kind of portfolio? a portfolio is a very generic term and could mean anything. you need to add more detail to your question.

As I am a photographer for a living I would reccommend you start with a good scrapbook with heavy black paper. Print your best photos as large as the book will allow and mount them one picture per page. Use all types if you have them, portraits, landscapes, weddings, children, b&w, color, sepia,etc... this shows your photographic diversity. Always be prepared to answer any questions about the photos. Good luck!
