It is a little less than 1/2

1/2 = 4/8
4/8 - 3/8 = 1/8

That's 1/4 of a cup of sugar PLUS 1/2 of the 1/4 cup. So use a 1/4 cup measure and fill it up 1.5 times -or- use a 1/3 cup of sugar and overfill it (a heaping 1/3 cup instead of a level 1/3 cup).

I find it hard to believe that a pie recipe (where amounts of sugar are pretty flexible anyway) would be so specific as to mention "3/8 cup".

Good luck.

I'd just use a half cup. A little extra sugar shouldn't make a big difference.

its a little less than 4/8 or half.

a little extra sugar will just make it sweeter anyway

I'd use a SCANT half cup. It will be fine!
