If I had the means to help someone, I would. If not, and I saw someone in need, I would pray to God for direction on how to help someone in need.

Well, to begin with taking care of the poor physically was never a part of Jesus teachings. You are reading the Book of Judas. Judas was the one who wanted to help the poor and it's a good notion, as the Pharasees noted.
Jesus takes care of the poor in spirit.
Give a man a Cheese Burger and you feed him for six hours. Give a man a life and he'll feed himself and possibly others forever.
I knew homeless people in L.A. and they were better off then most who weren't homeless.
They generally made $50 to $75 a day, spent some of it on food and some on booze.
They lived in a box under the freeway, climbed the pole and tapped into electricity. They picked up refrigerators, microwave ovens and TV sets that worked in the alley.
All they did all day long was sit on the island with a sign and collected money from "good souls" like you.
They then walked 50 feet to the store, bought microwave dinners, beer, wine, booze, then walked 200 feet to their boxes, sat down, watched free TV with free electricity and zapped those microwave dinners.
They also colleged $350 a month in General Relief delivered to them at the Counter (pick up or General Delivery).
They also got $150 in food stamps.
They got free health care at USC County under various County assitance programs.
They, basically, were making a larger income than I was travelling 20 miles to work at 6 am and coming home at 7 pm.
The only primary physical differences between them and me were clothing (they had one basic set) and hygeine, they rarely took full showers or baths.
The things they fouund in the alley that they didn't want, they sold on the streets. I once bought an Amiga computer of "Tony" in the alley for $20, he assured me it wasn't stolen.

I helped a homeless man once. He was old, a stroke victim, in a wheelchair, living in a laundromat. My Christian friend picked him up, rented a room for him for a week, and fed him. After that, we called a mission house, and they came and got him. We were both 18 years old, and young girls.
Christians are there to help. But, if God wants you to show initiative, too. God says, that those who are able to work, should work. If they don't work, they don't eat.
Seek help at a mission house. They will help you. Don't expect hand outs, and be prepared to give back.
And pray. God has given each of us special gifts. Think about what you can do, even if it means you have a strong back and can shovel dirt.

Since I am a woman living alone, I know this would not be appropriate for me.
However, if my path crossed with a woman whom in a situation similar to what you've described here, and I knew the Lord was calling me to take her in, and I had that peace of God which passes all understanding ruling my heart and mind in Christ Jesus in doing so (Philippians 4:7), then of course I would take her in. If I didn't have peace in my spirit about it, though, NO WAY would I do it! Jesus gave me this peace, and it cannot be taken away. If something is trying to take this peace away, then I must become the defender of that which my Lord has given.

I live in Philadelphia and there's tons of homeless here. I volunteer at shelters and kitchens, donate clothes and money to the shelters. I am not sure I do this because Im Christian or because I dont like seeing people suffer.

Last time a homeless person needed help on this forum, he got three responses, all atheists. When I posted something about this lack of response, I got yelled at by christians.
Having said that - if you are homeless, email me. I don't know that I can help - depending on what part of the country you live in, but I can give it a shot.

I live in Dallas, and am not in a position to help you outright, however, if you go to the Salvation Army, (get there early) and sign for a bunk, every morning , groups of Contractors show up looking for Day labourers, get with them, they pay cash every day.

Why just drug free and drink free? You don't think Jesus waited until people had cleaned up their act to help them would you?
Does that sound confrontational? You sound confrontational. I agree that we should all help the poor and needy, but why should I give you the statistics on people I have and haven't helped?

Our Church does this all the time. I'm sure there are others in your area that do also. At least a good agency they can recommend.
