I've seen a lot of misconceptions about it on here, and I'm just curious to see what people think it really is. Opinions, facts, sources, whatever you like.

Laveyan Satanism is a belief system that emphasizes independent thinking, self reliance, and self definition of moral codes. This path rejects indoctrination of any kind and views self limiting standards of behavior as a form of weakness or delusion. The deitiy is not so much an actual being called "Satan" so much as a satanic principle which consists of truth, honesty, freedom, personal power, elevation of pleasure and skepticism of religious dogma.
Adherants to this view find it very liberating and it is attractive to many alienated ex-christians. However critics point out that Lavey himself ended up miserable, sick, addicted and deluded and that the "church" itself is completely split and riddled with venomous infighting to this day. To some outsiders this seems to indicate that no philosophy based on self indulgence can lead to much good. However adherants of the Laveyan principles continue to insist that their lives have been improved by these ideas and that it is the most truthful approach to life available.

I agree. There are soooo many misconceptions of what LaVeyan Satanism is. Most people don't take the time to educate themselves about it and understand that we are atheistic. We have no belief in a god or devil. We are not devil worshippers.
We take the name "Satanist" from the christian myth of "Satan" We use it as a symbol for Wisdom and human nature. These are the things we hold very high, as did "Satan"

It's more a philosphy than a religion, and is summed up in his book, The Satanic Bible. LaVey worked for a circus and routinely saw people lusting after half-naked women, then going to church on Sunday mornings praying for forgiveness and self-control. LaVey decided that people's urges were normal and should be celebrated, not repressed. The Church of Satan was thence born.

Satanism doesn't really believe in a god, per se. They believe people are their own gods (hence, your own birthday is the most important holiday-why not celebrate the birth of a true god?!). They "worship" Satan since he is the enemy of the established religions, which they believe have been corrupted by power-hungry priests.

It is a self-contradicting worldview that says, "do whatever you want as long as you do no harm to others".

This is inconsistent and self-contradicting because it denies Absolute Truth and by doing so it denies any standard of good/evil, right/wrong, beneficial/hurtful.

In denying an absolute distinction between beneficial/hurtful, it has no basis for determining what "do no harm" means.

What if two people disagree on what constitutes "harm". Since they cannot appeal to Truth, all that's left is force. When Absolute Truth is denied, all that's left is "might makes right" and you don't want to live in a world like that! (unless you have all the might).

Satanism takes many forms. There are many variations. God warns us to stay away from anything of the evil spirit. Why would any Christians want to dig into the evils of this cult? This is a Christian category here. Many come here to do the works of Satan. Others of us come here to spread the love of Christ.

I think it's a decent setup, but the chapter in the satanic bible on artificial humanoid lovers makes it easy to ridicule--Lavey should have kept his fetish for inflate-a-mates out of the religion

it is the version of satanism laid out by anton lavey in the satanic bible. i own the book, though i do not practice the rituals contained in it. i do practice some of the things condoned by anton, such as not denying myself pleasure, revenge on those who wronged me, etc. laveyan satanism is a type of self-worship, as i understand it. the wisest thing anton teaches us is, "if a man smite you on one cheek, smash him on the other."

It is not of God, therefore it is of Satan. It is a tool used to drive a wedge between you and Christ. If you use it you lose. God is the only God--there is no other.

Repent and run as fast as you can from the environs of hell.
