She's 12 y/o, has never done this before. Moved to a brand new place ( with carpet ) and now she pees, when I'm home and when I'm not. Schnauzer/Cocker mix.

it's a new home and new surroundings. it probably just made your dog a little upset and nervous. give it time for your dog to adjust. just make sure to give your dog lots of love and attention.

First, you need to determine if it is submissive urination. This takes place infront of people, usually new people, not when you are not present. It is a gesture that says, "I'm just a little puppy, I'm no threat to you." (even if its a full grown dog).

My guess is, the dog hasn't got the new house figured out. A new place can be very confusing for an old dog who has lived most of her life in one place. She may not view the whole house as her new kennel yet. Where is the uriniation in the house? Same spots, different spots every time?

In any event, get an enzyme cleaner and clean all the spots to prevent her from habitually using the same spot.

You can try feeding her in the places where she has eliminated. This will help her understand, the whole house is her new kennel. Dogs generally don't want to eliminate where they live.

It's important that you don't punish her for her mistakes, especially if you think this is anxiety related. If you catch her in the act, give a GENTLE no, and lead her to the appropriate place. When she goes there, praise, praise, praise.

Lastly, I would have her checked out by the vet incase its a urinary tract infection of something of the like, although I'm guessing it's related to the recent changes.

In any event, hang in there, don't be discouraged....Good Luck!

The move has upset her. She needs attention, reassurance and help in making this her place too (special places to sleep, etc). Dogs are extremely conservative about space. They hate change. It is because it goes against their instinct to make sure their home turf is something they know like the back of their hand (or paw) in case of danger. Scramble that and you scramble the dog's confidence, hence, the peeing.

Have you had her checked by a vet? If not, I would recommend that you do. At her age it could very possibly be a medical problem (infection, incontinence, etc.). Dogs at this age don't usually start to urinate submissively unless something very traumatic happens and they feel they must show appeasement.

A new behaviour at 12? I doubt if it is submissive urination but more like incontenince (sp?). Take her to the vet, they have pills that can help.
