Yep lots of people. My son was diagnosed at age 14 with severe depression. Was hospitalized twice in two years. Quit school 3 times and finally graduated at age 20. Was on anti-depressive meds for about 3 years. In therapy as well. He is now 26, depression free (no meds) and heading for grad school. So, yes it can go away. (Xanax can make it worse, have you tried any other meds? All meds don't work the same)

This may sound a little calloused, but here is how I see it. I grew up in a different world than you my friend, and I learned from an early age what it was like to not have all you wanted, like something to eat, something to wear, and a warm place to sleep. So, my mind was able to accept bad things without too much stress after that. I learned to work hard and not be overcome when things did not go the way that I wanted them to. I learned what it was like to have the will to kill at the age of 13. That just made me unafraid of many people.
So, now I have found something even more fantastic in my life. I have found the power of the Holy Spirit, that come to someone who has accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Now this is where I think you should turn. If you give all your troubles and care over to Him and a have the Faith that only your salvation matters, you can throw all the drugs away and live so happy and free you won't believe it. Just try it, just pray to God to come into your life and keep at it untill he speaks to you!! I promise you he will , and then you will be on your way. Oh, also read the Holy Bible, start with the book of Romans. Do it son, Do it please!! G

I've been suffering from depression for about the same amount of time. I've been in therapy for 6yrs now. I have also been on numerous meds! I've been diagnosed as bipolar and as a matter of fact I'm going to see a new doctor today to get a 3rd opinion.
I understand you don't want to take meds anymore, neither do I. But I do think you should get therapy. If you can't afford it then you need to apply for public assistance to get help! You can not do this alone. You need help!
There are some things you can try like E3 Live (google it) or vitamin b or St Johns Wort.
Please email me so we can talk about it.

Of course you can get counseling...no matter what your money situation is. Contact your local department of social services. They will have you seen by mental health services.
There is a new treatment for depression. For when you've tried everything and it hasn't worked. Talk to your doctor about Vagus Nerve Stimulation. It was originally an implant for epileptics to help stop their seizures, but they found that their moods improved SO much that now they use it on depressives, too. It's even FDA approved.
From the Mayo Clinic:

Sorry, I thought I had read your whole question and had not, therefore, editing my response. I don't think it has to be permanent, but I wouldn't go at it alone without checking in with your family doctor every 6 months or so if you're going to go without meds and therapy.
