Dear Annie: Last month, my husband and I invited some friends for dinner. They brought a bottle of wine, and we served it with the meal. However, when these friends were leaving, they took the remainder of the bottle with them. Am I supposed to open the wine, or can I save it for another time? Tell me what to do, because they are coming over for dinner again. -- Thirsty in Oregon

Dear Oregon: The wine belongs to you whether or not you open it. While it is nice to serve the bottle with dinner, you are not obligated to do so. Thank your friends nicely and mention that you are looking forward to opening it at a later date. (from Korea Herald)

I understand that the friends took(brought) the bottle back ,
so now she has not the bottle, right?
Then why does she say such as "Am I supposed to open the wine, or can I save it for another time?"?

The person asking the question just meant LATER, if it happens again, should they open a bottle of wine if someone brings it. They don't have that particular bottle anymore. They just wondered if it was proper to always serve the wine a guest brings, or if you can keep the wine and not serve it right at that time.

You are right. The story doesn't make sense. How can they be asking whether to open the wine when it was open, served with dinner and then the friends took it?

I think maybe there is something missing. I think it should say that the hosts also had a bottle of wine ready for dinner which they didn't end up serving because the friends brought wine. And it is the bottle which they had for the dinner that they are asking about.

She was asking the woman for advice on proper etiquette for a dinner party.

She wasn't sure if she should have opened the bottle or not, especially after the friends took the remainder with them. She wonders if she should have not opened the wine and saved it for another day or if opening it was correct.

The response says she can do either, that the wine belongs to her once it has been gifted and that the friends were wrong to have taken it back.

The friends brought the bottle as a gift, and the letter is asking if they are required to open it to share with the people who brought it, or if they are allowed to save it and drink it later by themselves.

It is an etiquette issue. When something is a gift you don't have to share it with the giver. I understand that this would be a difficult idea to comprehend if English isn't your first language.

The story makes absolutely no sense. If "Thirsty" served the wine with the meal, then it's been opened already. Furthermore, the friends took the rest of the wine with them (which is very, very tacky).

It sounds like Thirsty has been smoking the ganja. Or your teacher is trying to test you.

She is asking about the new bottle that the friends will bring on this 2nd visit, she wonders if she should open it or save it. They took the old bottle home with them. This next visit, they will bring a new bottle that is not opened.

I think a lot of confusion would have been avoided if the sentence "Am I supposed to open the wine....: were re-written to read, "Am I supposed to open wine..." and if it started another paragraph. That way, we would understand that the writer was asking about
the proper etiquette for a hostess..
