I find the use of "try and" do something instead of "try to" do something to be the most annoying overly used mistake today.
What do you find most annoying?

I don't particularly find any usage annoying, because there is no one set "standard" of English. The idea that language is a set-in-stone thing is an archaic perpetuation of the class system, stemming back to the early modern english period. Read Algeo's thoughts on grammar from that period. Anyway, my point is we don't speak Old English, and wouldn't understand it if we heard it (it sounds more like norwegian with some german mixed with it). This is because there is no correct way to speak English, it is all subjective. Sorry this is so long.

Personally what I think is most annoying is the grammar nazis who refuse to accept that languages evolve just like everything else. It's like saying -- I hated it when when dinosaurs started spurting feathers. It is a part of the natural process of the development of a language.

But I suppose that thinking about language in the way you describe is a part of a society that focuses on a person's social class, it fulfills the need many people have to want to feel superior to others.

Peace though.

Well, our schools are not teaching proper grammar like they used to, they are more concerned with test scores. There has always been a certain way of using words that is okay in every day speech, so don't let people annoy you. The internet is creating a whole new spectrum of slang of its own, so language is evolving with us.

I do have to admit though, that I am annoyed with the word ain't. I just hate to hear kids use it and try to contol my desire to stereotype them based on that.

That "a lot" is two words. There is nothing that annoys me more than people not understanding that, unless you are speaking of an allotted amount of time, a space exists between "a" and "lot".

Using ellipses... over and... over again gets... really... annoying... too...

Snuk as the past tense of sneak. Sneak is a regular verb, thus the past tense is sneaked. I hate that one!

I don't care for the use of "barely" "We were barely there when the..." "Oh, I just barely did that" Some words get over used and right now that is one of them and it is driving my nuts!
