ask about the ollege access funds, sometimes called hardship funds, ALL colleges and universities have them but the funds are limited so apply early.

Some charities and educational trusts give money to students, try EGAS they will send your son a form and then identify possible sources of funding, although to be honest they tend to have been set up in the days when men found work easily so women stand more chance as do those with a disability.

There is a huge reference book called something like "grant making trusts" - you will find it in the library but it is normally only for reference.

I went through the entire book identifying trusts that may help me, I put these on a database, I then did a mailmerge and wrote off about 200 letters, I got about 20 replies and funding from about 6.

One advantage of this kind of funding is that it does not count as income so is not taxed and does not affect dss benefits.

Your son stands more chance if one of his parents is a member of particular groups such as freemasons, or a member of the clergy or even the geografical area he lives in.

good luck.

bursarys come straight from the college. There should be some advice centre he can access within it . He can also look into help from the Learning Education Authority he is attached to.

That site has information about general financial help

Tell him to apply to the college for help if you are on a low wage you should be entitled to full help and he could help by getting a part time job.this is what most students do.

He should apply for a means-tested scholarship (financial aid), get a part-time job, or get a student loan.
