If you go to www.ask.com and type in "How to trace my family history". It should probably help you or give you some leads to other people that can help you. If not that site go to Google I know they should have something. What your Mum's doing seems pretty cool I hope she finds what she's looking for!

The library, historical society or genealogical society in Portsmouth may be able to help you. I'm in the US and don't know if all three exist; at least two do, I'd bet.

A year's membership to either society might be a nice gift idea, if your mum doesn't already belong.

Search public records court houses, libraries, ask relaitives to help, newspapers, search Uk newspapers and historical documents maybe there will be a picture in a Uk newpaper.

there's many great sites for geneology: ancestry.com, mytrees.com, etc.
maybe the local historical society can help you find a picture.
