Slavery was once legal and you may say now of course, but it took a war that almost destroy this country to make that possible.

So my question is, if some slaves escaped through mexican border were they free once there? were they considered illegals over there ??

mobchilli : Girl you definetely must be white, every slave had the hope of one day being free. They were slaves, not servants, they would beat them down if they were asked to do something and they didnt do it.

It depends the year the slave would escape! Because Mexico first abolished slavery! It also depends on what part of Mexico. Was it Texas? If so Texas at the time was mainly controlled by white slave owning Anglos, so chances have it that he would be captured and would have been sold back into slavery!

Most went there with their owners who purchased them(Mexico had blacks there in the 1500's who were slaves and received harsh treatment from many of their owners)... I have a book that touches on the subject of black slaves in Mexico(as for cruel treatment, even spanish servants were treated harshly) ... often the(blacks) were just servants who had freedom to lead their own life and lived on or near where they worked. Many whites were astonished to see Spanish men who had black wives when they journeyed to Mexico on business. In the Texas part (which belonged to Mexico) such slaves would often be returned to former owners or taken as slaves by the people who caught them... I do know some Spanish people who decended from blacks in Mexico and their people had their own homes and property (they married mexicans).
If you look at many of the mexicans today ... you may have noticed several of them who are similar in appearance to blacks.
Even in the North many blacks did not find the freedom they had sought and many ended up facing the same kinds of cruelty as they did on the plantations in the South. Most people don't like to hear this but every black person wasn't a slave back then. If every black was a slave(and couldn't own property or attend school during the times they were suppose to be slaves) then why is it that there were blacks who owned property, had businesses and their children went to school, had their own social clubs etc.... many things I have come across in reading history of blacks in America....(not the stuff found in the history books in schools)- I have been fascinated by what I have found in my travels and from the blacks I have encountered and the sources that reveal such things that I didn't learn or read about in school!

Slaves did not likely run away to Mexico. They where taken as slaves and where more personal servants of their masters, than slaves.
