It can be many things, and an MRI is not pain full except the laying flat on your back and it takes about 45 minutes. Make sure you put ear plugs in your ears. Good luck :)

Back pain is one of the most common complaints in the medical field. There are many causes. Look for the most obvious first. An x-ray would rule out any obvious malformity. An MRI could be quite expensive and may only result in more difficult decisions to make. As an RN, I have rarely seen surgeries solve the problem. Managing the pain becomes the big issue and there are several choices. I've seen too many patients that end up relying on pain medications that in turn, start to control their lives. I also have chronic back pain and manage it with acupuncture treatments. Look at as many options as possible before you go the drug route.

yep, it's been off and on since April. I've been misdiagnosed twice because x-rays showed a kidney stone hanging out in my kidney so everyone thought it was that.
Only recently did the docs figure out that the kidney stone is dormant and not doing anything right now, and that it was really bulging discs in my spine.
they found it through the CT scan, but I have had an MRI on my knees before. It's not really scary because you're head doesn't go in the tube so you don't feel closed in or anything - the bill was kind of scary to me though :p

Yes I have had back pain for a very long time. The Doctor will help you out. Try ice on your back, it works for me. I take pain pills, but I still go back to the ice every now and them.
A MRI is no big deal. It's mostly the noise it makes. You go into
a big tunnel, and the bed your laying on moves so it can take different pictures of you back. Good luck to you.

Where is the back pain? I have had low back and sciatica in the past Spent 3 months in the hospital with it in a full body cast..(in service). Took a 10 day leave and went home .. my mom took me to see her chiropractor and I went back to the hospital and checked out.. Have only had it recur two other times in my life. I do not have a disc at L.5, S1. Yet the level has not fused itself yet. My last episode was about 10 years ago and only took about 5 treatments (while I continued working) to have recovery.

Yes I've had chronic back pain since I was a child. One day I woke up and couldn't get out of bed. My mom had to dress me and take me to the hospital. I had x-rays done and it turned out to be a minor deformity in my spinal column. The doctor gave me special exercises to do, and while I still get a sore back, it is much more manageable now.

i have some horrible back pains. i had it diagnosed with xrays and mri's for a while they didnt know what it was, then they found i had a pulled muscle .and spurs growing on my spine. the only way to fix it is surgery.there are lots of reasons why your back could hurt i would have an m.r.i. done on it.
