My GP's just prescribed a steroid inhaler because my airway is inflamed and I am coughing constantly. He thinks it is due to an environmental allergen. I'm a Newly Qualified Teacher and the classroom I was given in Sept has an air conditioning / warm air heating unit. My problems with sore throat and constant coughing started in October and is now so persistent that I cannot speak without coughing (not useful in teaching). I'm taking the inhaler and the swelling in my throat is easing, but not the cough. What can I do to stop coughing? Do I have to rethink my place of work? Any advice would be welcome.

The problems with the air conditioning causing you ill health can be several, examples of these are as follows:
1) Filters have not been replaced
2) No maintenance has been carried out on AC Plant
3) No health and safety inspection been carried out by Safety Rep
4) No air sample taken for analysis
5) No Risk Assessment has been made by management
6) Vents not been cleaned
7) Sick building syndrome

Recommendation's

1) See your safety rep and ask that a air quality analysis be carried out by qualified person's. Your School has a duty of care under the Health and Safety Act 1974.
2) If your School refuses to do this, then your safety rep should contact the Health and Safety Executive
3) Vist the HSE website for further unformation

You need to se a ENT ear nose and throat docter ..Sound more like Broncitis to me a bug thats pasted thru the air you are breathing from another person or persons young people get it as well as a old coming out of summer its a air born Bacterium...
Some Bactrim antiboitic will clear it up ...Sighns are coughing all the time, weakness ,sneezing ,clear mucus but sticky spit in a glass of water see if it is clear and stringy..The steriod inhaler is making it worse because all steriods lower the bodys imune system to fight bugs ..Its a trade off antiinflammatory drug..

Your place of work has a duty of care to you and your health. Talk to them about researching the air conditioning. It could be that the water has not been emptied from it and is full of bacteria. It could be even worse if it is a tank fed one as there could be a dead rat or pigeon in it. Definitely take it up with your school via your Health and Safety designated person. If you're not sure who this is read your Health and Safety brown poster which should be somewhere prominent. If there isn't one or no name on it, they're breaking the law.

Steriod inhalers may be helpful to a degree but are not fun to be on for long term. You need to strengthen your constitution and find the root of the problem. Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture and herbs) can address such problems. It is unlikely that the school will change their ventilation system so improving your underlying health may be the way to go. Find a good licensed practioner in your area. They should have "lac" (licensed acupunturist) after their name.

There could well be dust or mold inside the ductwork or the air conditioner/heat pump. Find out what you have to do to get that checked and taken care of.

Good luck.

I would first check to see if the air filter has been changed or cleaned recently. It might be re-polluting the air when it's on.

I would also find out if the air ducts have been cleaned (ever). You'd be amazed will the pollutants hang out there.

Hope that helps...

Yes, pick a career that doesn't involve coughing constantly and make you take a ton of sick days.
