www.fdncenter.org always has good lisitngs of local foundations to apply to. Have you checked the Community foundation for your city? Most larger towns will have one. And since this is year's end and people are generous (and looking for tax breaks), consider an appeal letter to everyone on your mailing list.

Do you have 501(c)3 status? That is an IRS designation that you are a registered non profit and that donations are tax deductible.
There are companies that will set up a donation site for you.
You can sell things.
Develop awareness about the work of your organization. Send press releases to media. Plan an event that media might cover.
See if you can partner with another more experienced non profit.
Go to the library and research fundraising, marketing and public relations for non profits.

Depends on what kind of donations you're looking for. Money is a tough one. Best bet is to offer some sort of fundraiser. Lots of clubs, etc. sell fundraiser cards... where local businesses have donated services which are on the card, such as free oil changes, buy 1 get 1 free offers for pizza, sundaes, etc. Places like Krispy Kreme & a lot of the candy stores (Sees) & pizza places have fundraiser stuff too. Again though, depends on what the non-profit is.
If you're looking for GOODS... which are generally much easier to get... there's a few ways to go about it. When I was looking for art supplies for the Boys & Girls Club in my area, I put an ad on craigslist. I ended up with two HUGE totes filled to the brim with all sorts of stuff! If your organization needs toys, hold a toy drive, if you need jackets, hold a jacket drive, etc.
People are generally more willing to offer goods than money...even if they have to go out and buy the goods. I think it's so that they KNOW what the money is being used for. Otherwise, many fear that even though they're being TOLD the money is for warm blankets for the homeless, half of it is actually paying the program director, etc. By donating a blanket... they KNOW they aren't padding anyone's wallet.
