Pilgrim simply means someone who travels on a quest. Devout Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca for example. Christians similarly make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Israel. In the case of early pilgrims to the U.S., the quest was typically for freedom from persecution, for gold and riches, or for land to till.

Thus, there were pilgrims long before the historical Plymouth Rock landing. Many pilgrims to the U.S. settled in what is now known as Virginia around 1607, before the Plymouth Rock landing in 1620. Historians doubt the first landing was actually on the rock itself. [See sources.]

Other pilgrims settled in Florida and other parts of the east coast. Check out the second cited source for a brief history of other pilgrims and where they settled.
